Remove shadows on screen captures in OS X

By default OS X saves screen shots with a shadow around them. This can be easily changed so that screen shots are saved without shadows.

  1. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app).
  2. Write or copy defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true to the Terminal window and press Enter.
  3. Then restart SystemUIServer by writing or copying killall SystemUIServer to Terminal and press Enter again.

That's it.

If you change your mind you can reverse the process by changing true to false in the first line and then restarting SystemUIServer again.
